Police identify man killed in downtown Lincoln shooting

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man who was shot and killed early Sunday morning in downtown Lincoln has been identified.

Assistant Police Chief Jason Stille said 24-year-old Saiveon Hopkins was shot in the chest around 1:30 a.m. near 11th and P streets.

He was taken to the hospital, where he died a few hours later. Another victim of the shooting has injuries that are not life-threatening.

Stille said investigators are trying to determine exactly what led up to the shooting, but they believe it stemmed from a fight outside a nearby bar. It is unknown what led up to that fight.

Officers were in the area dealing with a “variety of disturbances” when the shooting occurred. Investigators believe the shooting is unrelated to Saturday’s soccer game.

Anyone with information or video footage of the shooting is asked to contact police at 402-441-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.
