“I will be remiss in my duty if I forget to mention that this project was originally conceived more than a decade ago in 2012 by the then Chairman of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata ji, who spearheaded the entire concept to establish a relationship to build with Airbus and created this partnership with Airbus and laid the foundation stone for this opportunity. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the partnership between Airbus and Tata will contribute to the progress of the Indian aerospace industry and “open new doors” for the entry of other European companies.

“This project brings the best of both worlds together. Tata is probably the best exponent of Indian industrial strength. The company’s products and services are present in virtually every country in the world. Tata is a giant among giants,” he said.

Why C-295 aircraft are a game-changer

The C-295 is a transport aircraft with a capacity of 5-10 tons and equipped with modern technology that will replace the aging Avro-748 aircraft of the Indian Air Force. The C-295 is known to be a superior aircraft used for tactical transport of up to 71 troops or 50 paratroopers and for logistical operations to locations inaccessible to today’s heavier aircraft.

The aircraft, called “robust and reliable”, with a flight time of up to 11 hours, can perform multi-role operations in all weather conditions.

It can routinely perform both day and night combat missions in desert and maritime environments.

The C-295 has a tailgate for quick response and paradropping of troops and cargo. Another feature is the short take-off/landing from semi-prepared surfaces.

All 56 aircraft under the agreement will also be equipped with an indigenous Electronic Warfare suite manufactured by Indian DPSUs – Bharat Electronics Ltd and Bharat Dynamics Limited.
