WINNING AT THE MARGIN
Coach Matt Campbell constantly preaches winning at the margins and taking care of the details. Well, this season the Cyclones have done all the little things right.

  • PENALTY: Iowa State is one of the least penalized teams in the country. The Cyclones lead the nation in fewest penalties per game (25.14) and rank second nationally in fewest penalties (2).
  • TURNOVER: ISU has a turnover margin of +9, which leads the Big 12 and is No. 7 nationally.
  • SPECIAL TEAMS: The Cyclones have been good on special teams this season. Iowa State won at Iowa on a game-winning field goal and has blocked two punts, one of which was returned for a touchdown. ISU is one of 11 teams in the nation with two blocked punts this season.
  • NEGATIVE PLAYS: Iowa State has largely avoided major negative plays this season. ISU ranks fifth in the Big 12 and No. 26 nationally in sacks allowed (8).

WILD RUN
Iowa State’s rushing attack was one of the biggest areas of growth from last season to this season.

  • Carson Hansens seven rushing TDs are more than ISU’s all-time leader from a season ago (Abu Sama, 6).
  • Hansen is the first Cyclone to have more than 90 rushing yards in three straight games since Breece Hall did so in 2021.
  • The Cyclones rushed for more than 200 yards in three straight games for the first time since 2021 (Arkansas State, Houston, Baylor).
  • ISU has rushed for more than 230 yards in four of its last five games.

ISU rushing comparison
Stands Hurrying yards Rushed TDs
2023 (13 games) 1,559 16
2024 (7 games) 1,399 16

STOPPING THE PASS
Iowa State’s opponents have struggled to throw the ball against the veteran Cyclone secondary this season. The ISU defense is allowing just 133.7 passing yards per game (2nd nationally) and has allowed just 99 completions this season, one of the top five nationally in fewest completions allowed.

Opponents are completing just 51.3 percent of their passes and averaging just 4.9 yards per pass attempt against the Cyclones, the second-fewest nationally.

The Cyclones have 12 interceptions in seven games this season and boast a turnover margin of +9, which is among the top 10 in the country.

  • The Cyclones are bowl eligible for the seventh time in nine seasons Matt Campbell.
  • ISU is 12-3 in its last 15 games, including 7-1 in road games. The Cyclones have won five straight Big 12 Conference games for the third time (2018, 2020), with a chance to win six in a row for the first time.
  • Iowa State’s defense, bottom Jon Heacock‘s direction, leads the Big 12 and ranks ninth nationally, allowing just 14 points per game. ISU allows just 304.0 yards of total offense per game, 18th nationally and top in the Big 12.
  • The longer the game goes on, the stronger the defense becomes. In the second half of games, ISU has allowed just 5.7 points and 125.3 yards. In the fourth quarter the opponents score 2.9 points.
  • Rocco Becht led the Cyclones on the second game-winning drive of the season against UCF, leading ISU 80 yards in 1:18 for a TD. He has a TD pass in 11 straight games, which is tied for the second-longest streak in school history.
  • Becht’s favorite tandem – Jaylin Noel And Jayden Higgins – have made it clear that they are one of the best duos in the country. Noel (3) and Higgins (2) each have multiple 100-yard games this season. Higgins has a TD in eight of his last nine games. Against UCF, the duo combined for 211 yards and one touchdown on 14 catches. It was the fifth time in seven games that they combined for at least 10 catches, 175 yards and a score, the most nationally by a string of teammates.
