Rapper and hype man was 53

Isaac Freeman III, the award-winning rapper and hype man known professionally as Fatman Scoop, has died after suffering a medical emergency on stage. He was 53.

Freeman’s death was confirmed in a statement on his verified Instagram page on Saturday.

“It is with deep sadness and a very heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of the legendary and iconic Fatman Scoop,” Freeman’s family said in a statement. “Last night the world lost a radiant soul, a beacon of light on stage and in life.”

USA TODAY has reached out to Freeman’s representatives for more information.

On Friday, TMZ shared a video showing Freeman suffering an apparent medical emergency and collapsing onstage during a performance at Town Center Park in Hamden, Connecticut.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Hamden Mayor Lauren Garrett confirmed that Freeman “suffered a medical emergency on stage” and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. “Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers,” she wrote. On Saturday, Garrett offered “sincere condolences to the family and friends” of the rapper.

“I am grateful to the public and our paramedics who attempted to provide life-saving aid,” Garrett said. “For anyone who is struggling to process and grieve Isaac’s loss, especially after witnessing the tragedy that unfolded at Town Center Park, we are providing bereavement counseling with our social worker.”

Freeman has worked with artists such as Mariah Carey and Missy Elliott during his career, and has appeared on songs such as Elliott’s “Lose Control,” which won the Grammy for best short-form video. The rapper is also known for songs such as his own 1999 song “Be Faithful.”

His energy, talent and infectious spirit will be missed more than words can express.”

In a statement released by Freeman’s family, he was described as “not only a world-class artist” but also as “a father, brother, uncle and friend.”

“Fatman Scoop was known worldwide as the undisputed voice of the club,” the statement said. “His music made us dance and embrace life with positivity. His joy was infectious and the generosity he gave to everyone will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.”
