Richard Gere Gives the Middle Finger to Savannah Guthrie During Live ‘Today’ Segment: ‘Obscene’

What’s going on at the Today set lately? Richard Ger flashed his middle finger Savannah Guthrie during an episode of the morning talk show on Wednesday, November 20.

Viewers listening at home may have been confused by the gesture during the interview.

“You just made an obscene gesture on this family morning show!” Savannah, 52, told Richard, 75, after it happened.

It seems the Beautiful woman actor played an excerpt from his new series, The Agency. Today showed a clip from the series, but conveniently cut the clip to the part where Richard’s character flips the bird. So he took it upon himself to complete the scene for real for Savannah.

“You didn’t show it, but I did in the play!” Richard told the broadcaster. “That was the clip!”

“That was the clip, but we cut that part out. But then you did it live!” Savannah told me Chicago actor.

“I saw that, but without it it wouldn’t make any sense!” he explained the reason why he made the gesture. “My hand did that, I have no control over it!”

Savannah referenced another celebrity snub that took place Today earlier this week.

“I’m beeping you!” she added. “You know, Cher was here yesterday throwing an f-bomb, so I don’t know what’s happening!”

On Tuesday, November 19, Cher joined us Hoda Kotb on Today where she said the f-word during a live segment while discussing her new memoir.

Hoda, 60, asked Cher, 78, about the advice famous girlfriend Lucille Ball once gave her about ending her marriage to Sonny Bono.

“I can’t say it on TV,” the “Believe” singer said before asking if the producers would “bleep it” if she swore. Hoda told her that producers would definitely make it bleep if she swore. However, she was wrong.

“I said, ‘Lucy, I’m calling you because, as far as I know, there’s never been any situation other than mine, except yours,’” Cher said, referring to the I love Lucy actress’ very public divorce from Desi Arnaz. ‘And she said, ‘F–k him. You’re the one with the talent!’”

Hoda looked like she was completely shocked that Cher’s f-bomb didn’t end up bleeping right away. Several other people could be heard behind the camera Today studio responds to the blunder on air.

“Oh!” Hoda exclaimed after it happened. “Okay… we didn’t have the seven second (delay)! But we will come for the next feed!”

“Well, you said I could!” Cher told Hoda, asking her to respond, “I should have bleeped it myself!” Beep!”

All obscene gestures aside, it looks like Richard is very excited about his new show airing. The Agency is inspired by the French series The deskwhich he became a fan of.

“It’s very well written… it’s amazing,” he said during his speech Today appearance. “I mean, they’re all great. And we shot it like a movie. We do it the same way. Movie directors, movie actors, the schedule is like a movie schedule. It feels the same to me.”

The Agency streams on Friday, November 29 on Paramount+ and Showtime.
