Rapper Fatman Scoop dies after collapsing on stage during concert in Connecticut

Fatman Scoop died after fainting during a concert in Connecticut on Friday night.

His family confirmed his death in an Instagram post on Saturday. He was 53.

“It is with deep sadness and a very heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of the legendary and iconic FatMan Scoop,” a post on his Instagram page read. “Last night the world lost a shining soul, a beacon of light on stage and in life.”

The rapper and hype man, whose real name is Isaac Freeman III, was performing at the Green and Gold Party summer concert in Hamden, about six miles from New Haven, when he suffered a medical emergency onstage.

City Mayor Lauren Garrett said he was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

In a statement Saturday, Garrett thanked crowd members and emergency workers who attempted life-saving measures.

“On behalf of the City of Hamden, I offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Isaac Freeman, better known as Fatman Scoop,” she posted on Facebook. “He was an incredible artist with a large following, as evidenced by the thousands of fans who came out to see what would be his final performance at Hamden Town Center Park.”

The mayor said bereavement services would be available to community members.

Videos posted to social media showed a shirtless Fatman Scoop egging on the crowd at Town Center Park shortly before collapsing. The event was scheduled to take place last month, but was postponed until Friday night due to weather.

Fatman Scoop has collaborated with some of the biggest musicians including Missy Elliott’s “Lose Control”, Mariah Carey’s “It’s Like That”, “Level Up (Remix)” by Ciara and “Let’s Ride” by Chingy.

“FatMan Scoop was not only a world-class artist, he was a father, brother, uncle and friend. He was the laugh in our lives, a constant source of support, unwavering strength and courage,” his family wrote. “FatMan Scoop was known to the world as the undisputed voice of the club. His music made us dance and embrace life with positivity. His joy was infectious and the generosity he gave to everyone will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.”

Missy Elliott said Fatman Scoop’s “VOICE and energy have contributed to MANY songs that made people happy and want to dance for over 20 years.”

“Your IMPACT is HUGE and will NEVER be forgotten,” she wrote in a post on X.

Public Enemy rapper Chuck D called Fatman Scoop an “amazing human being.”

Questlove, of the hip-hop band The Roots, said Fatman Scoop was the “embodiment of what hip-hop was really about. Just forgetting about your problems, living in the moment and letting the joy in.”

“So sad to see you go my brother,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “You will be missed but you will NEVER be forgotten. *holds up a $100 bill in your memory*.”
