Real Madrid suffers triple injury in victory over Osasuna

Éder Militão, Rodrygo and Lucas Vázquez all had to be substituted during Real Madrid’s 4-0 LaLiga win over Osasuna on Saturday, adding to the club’s extensive injury list.

Vinícius Júnior scored a hat-trick for Madrid and Jude Bellingham scored his first goal of the season, but the win was soured by the triple injury of Militão, Rodrygo and Vázquez.

“It was a good match, we controlled it well from the start,” coach Carlo Ancelotti said at his post-match press conference. “From the moment we opened the score, the team looked good. The unfortunate thing is the injuries in the first half. We are assessing them now, and we will see.”

“Three injuries in the first half is quite strange. The calendar is demanding and does not allow the players to rest. They go into the match tired, which increases the risk of injuries.”

Striker Rodrygo – who had only just returned to the team after recovering from a hamstring problem – was withdrawn from the Bernabéu in the 20th minute and replaced by Brahim Díaz.

Center back Militão required treatment ten minutes later before being stretchered off, with youngster Raul Asencio introduced in his place.

Vázquez was then withdrawn at half-time and replaced by Luka Modric.

Madrid are lacking in defense, with Dani Carvajal out for the season with a serious injury and David Alaba not yet fully recovered from his cruciate ligament tear.

They are also without goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who has a thigh injury, and midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni – who sometimes comes in at the back – who has an ankle sprain.

“We have to thank the academy for the work they have done with Asencio,” Ancelotti said. “He is a player we need at the moment… Raul has done well with (reserve team) Castilla and now he will be with us.”

Ancelotti does not want to say whether the series of injuries increases the chance of a signing in January.

“We will assess it in the coming months,” he said. “At the moment we can’t do anything. We will evaluate what we can do in January.”

“I don’t want to talk about it because it hurts me to see my teammates crying,” Diaz said after the match when asked about the club’s injury problems.

“It breaks my heart. I’m back from a long injury and now it’s their turn. It seems like they might last longer than usual… It breaks my heart.”

Madrid had gone into the match against Osasuna under pressure, having been defeated twice at home in their previous two games, against Barcelona and AC Milan.

They now have a two-week break before returning to action against Leganés on November 24 and traveling to Anfield to play Liverpool in the Champions League on November 27.

Saturday’s victory leaves Madrid six points behind LaLiga leaders Barcelona, who play on Sunday.
