Real Madrid produced Champions League magic again on Tuesday, overturning a 2-0 half-time deficit to beat Borussia Dortmund 5-2 and get their European season back on track.

Vinicius Jr. was the Blancos’ star on the night, scoring the second, fourth and fifth goals, but it was Lucas Vazquez’s go-ahead goal that will remain the enduring mark of a memorable evening.

Dortmund took the lead after a back-and-forth first 30 minutes. Serge Guirassy passed the ball to Donyell Malen, who fired the ball past a helpless Thibaut Courtois. Jamie Gittens added a second four minutes later, sneaking in at the back post to turn in Malen’s cross.

Madrid responded with a short attack in which they did a rather remarkable job of not finding the net. Jude Bellingham missed a golden opportunity and then blasted an effort off the crossbar. Rodrygo also hit the woodwork before a full-court save from Gregor Kobel prevented an odd deflection from sneaking in.

Madrid inevitably woke up after the break. A more cautious approach from Nuri Sahin brought pressure from the home side, and a spinning frontline delivered results. Toni Rudiger scored the first, heading in Kylian Mbappe’s cross, before Vinicius buried the equalizer less than two minutes later.

Everything else felt inevitable after that. Vazquez scored a third, before Vinicius scored two more outrageous goals to complete his hat-trick and cap off another memorable Champions League win.
