Record summer draws crowds to Lake Mead on Labor Day

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – With the Las Vegas Valley experiencing the hottest summer on record, many people are flocking to Lake Mead to cool off during the Labor Day holiday.

“A little bit cooler than Las Vegas and it’s beautiful,” said Liam Bade, who was visiting from Germany.

From people to pets, there were plenty of people at the lake on Monday and 8 News Now spoke with many of them on the lake.

“I think it’s great, but I think it’s a shame that the value is still so low,” said Kara Kehring, a Las Vegas resident who brought her friends from Minnesota to see the lake.

According to the Bureau of Reclamation, the lake is about 36% full.

Stacy O’Leary, a Las Vegas resident and frequenter of Lake Mead, says she hasn’t seen it this busy in a long time.

“This is the busiest weekend I’ve had here in years,” O’Leary said.

After people drowned in the lake in early August, she is urging others to wear a life jacket.

“The other day we came down and we rescued two girls who were standing on the mountainside with the rowboat and two girls who didn’t have life jackets. You have to have your life jackets,” O’Leary said.

With multiple deaths this year, the lake is on track to have its deadliest year yet. The U.S. Park Service said most drownings on the lake are caused by people not wearing life jackets.

Those at the lake will also notice that docks “I” and “R” remain closed since the June 9 fire there. That fire affected 37 boats and is still under investigation, but no foul play is suspected at this time.

Although the warm days at the lake are coming to an end, the seasonal trails open again in late September when the weather cools down.
