Rhett Lashlee provides injury update ahead of Week 2 against BYU

SMU OLB Isaiah Smith talks BYU, first two games for Mustangs

SMU is set to play its first power conference opponent as a member of the ACC, hosting BYE on Friday night in Dallas. A large crowd is expected at Gerald R. Ford Stadium as the Mustangs return to the highest level of football. Rhett Lashlee It certainly helps if you mention the success of the program in previous years.

Just a few days before kickoff there was some injury news that Lashlee addressed. Almost everything was positive after the game against Houston Christian. Lashlee mentioned three players who had issues, but expects them all to be back BYE.

“I think Moochie (Dixon) should be available this week,” Lashlee said. “He had back spasms last week so we held him. I think Rooster (Knighton) should be available this week. LJ (Johnson)“We’re taking him day by day. I think he’s good enough to go… I think we’re in pretty good shape with everyone who played last week and the few we kept should be available. I don’t think anything changes.”

Johnson and Knighton are both running backs, but only the former has made a real impact so far. Through two games, Johnson has rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, making him SMU’s second-leading rusher. Knighton has just one carry for four yards, which came in the season-opening win against NevadaYou can also add two receptions for 26 yards to his stats.

Based on Lashlee’s words, both should be available against BYU, giving SMU an even stronger defensive line when facing a Big 12 opponent.

As for Dixon, the wide receiver hasn’t contributed much yet. He did get to play against Nevada, but his only recorded stat line was a tackle after an interception of quarterback Preston Stone. There hasn’t been a reception so far this season. Hopefully that changes Friday night and the fifth-year player adds a new dynamic to the SMU offense.

The Mustangs have a chance to start their season 3-0 before a bye week. BYU won’t be an easy task, but getting a few offensive pieces healthy will help.
