Russell Wilson is everything the Pittsburgh Steelers were waiting for

PITTSBURGH – Maybe the Pittsburgh Steelers have a quarterback. And maybe Mike Tomlin made the right decision by letting Russell Wilson test the reins as the starter in Week 7. And maybe this violation is just the beginning.

The Steelers’ offense in the first half wasn’t anything to get too excited about. They had a lot of three-and-outs, some bad rushing numbers and as many dead drives as scoring units. But at the end of the first 30 minutes, Pittsburgh scored 13 points, which is almost double what they averaged in the game.

However, that was just the beginning.

Wilson finished his starting debut with the most passing yards in Steelers history for a quarterback’s first start. That historic mark now sits at 264 yards and two TDs, and while it’s not a new record, he also added a rushing touchdown on a quarterback sneak.

Around him, George Pickens had 111 yards and a touchdown, Pat Freiermuth 51 yards, Calvin Austin 31 yards and Darnell Washington 36 yards. Van Jefferson also added a touchdown.

In the backfield, Najee Harris finished with 102 yards and Jaylen Warren added another 44.

The performance was one of, if not the best in recent memory. And since Ben Roethlisberger retired, it was the first time this group felt like they had the entire game in their hands. Something many thought the Steelers offense was no longer capable of.

So while many (myself included) questioned Mike Tomlin’s decision, it turned out to be the best decision he could have made. Wilson is the Steelers ‘man’. He is their leader. And afterwards, it was clear from the smiles in the locker room and the joy in the players’ voices that they knew they had finally found their quarterback.

As time goes on, Justin Fields packages may become a thing for the Steelers. Maybe at some point they’ll try to do more with this offense by adding the quarterback that got them to 4-2. But the questions about whether or not Wilson would be the starter for the rest of the season have been answered.

This violation has been initiated. They can add another wide receiver and eventually get some healthy linemen. But for the most part, they have all their pieces, including now their starting quarterback.

A piece they have been looking for for a long time.
