San Diego residents prepare for hottest temperatures of the year

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) — San Diego will be baking in some of its highest temperatures of the year this week.

An extreme heat warning is in effect from Wednesday morning to Friday evening.

At the weekly farmers market in San Marcos, vendors do their best to stay cool.

Alfredo Garcia is the owner of Dropouts Pizza. Rain, shine or triple heat, you will find him at his stand.

“We stand here in front of a 600-degree oven until seven o’clock, when it’s at full temperature, because we love the public,” Garcia said.

But the public is not always happy with the heat.

“If it’s too hot or too cold, everyone stays home. That’s bad for business,” Garcia said.

Sellers do everything they can to make it as comfortable as possible, for example by putting up umbrellas or bringing along portable fans.

“I have some difficulty with the heat, but here in the market it is convenient,” says Adrian Mandujano.

Without his portable fan, he wouldn’t be able to work.

“It’s like a portable AC unit. It’s a lot more powerful though;& you fill it up, and it’s also a built-in mister.”

SDG&E is reminding customers to conserve energy. The utility recommends not using large appliances between 4 and 9 p.m. and setting the thermostat to 78 degrees.

California hasn’t had a Flex Alert since 2022, when it had 11 that summer. A utility spokesperson says the grid is in good shape, but it’s always best to be prepared for the possibility of an outage.

“Over the last two years, a lot of battery storage technology has become available, and that has really helped us get the energy we need during these critical peak times,” Wagner said.

Back at the farmers market, Garcia deals with the heat with humor.

“I didn’t check the weather today until I got here, and I started burning up and melting away. I was about 50 pounds heavier when I first got here, but I’m a little lighter now,” Garcia laughed.
