Saquon Barkley hopeful ex-teammate Daniel Jones may find success elsewhere: ‘It didn’t work there for me’

Saquon Barkley is hopeful that former teammate Daniel Jones can have the same success he had with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The New York Giants announced Friday that they have agreed to cut Jones after the quarterback asked the team to release him just days after he was benched for third-string quarterback and fan favorite Tommy DeVito.

“Daniel came to me this morning and asked if we would release him. We mutually agreed that this would be best for him and for the team,” president John Mara said in a statement.

“Daniel has been a tremendous representative of our organization, first-class in every respect. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies exactly that. We are all disappointed with the way things turned out. We hold Daniel in the highest regard. and have great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best for the future.”

The move came as no surprise as Jones has struggled since signing a four-year, $160 million contract in 2023. In six seasons with the team, Jones managed to lead the Giants to a unique playoff victory.

With Jones on his way out, former teammate Saquon Barkley was asked Friday for his thoughts on the decision.

‘I’m not going to say too much about that, I have been in contact with him. Our friendship has remained close throughout my time here. It sucks to see how everything turned out for him there.”

“I have nothing but good things to say about him. I don’t think you’re really going to find anyone who can really say a lot of negative things about him. But it’s the NFL. Hopefully, wherever he ends up, they’ll find someone who comes in and works.”

Barkley signed a three-year contract with the Eagles during the offseason after his tenure in New York began to deteriorate as he tried to negotiate a long-term deal.

The star running back, who has already surpassed 1,000 rushing yards and posted 10 touchdowns this season, believes Jones can find the same success elsewhere.

“It didn’t work for me there, and I’m doing well here. And hopefully he can find the same kind of fresh start and success.”
