The 2024 Paralympic Games have officially begun!

As the excitement of the 2024 Summer Olympics continues to rage in Paris, 4,400 athletes with a disability, permanent injury or handicap kicked off the Paralympic Summer Games at an opening ceremony on Wednesday, August 28.

Paralympians from more than 168 delegations took the lead in this unique event. It is the first time that the Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony will be held outside a stadium, following the same event that took place a month earlier in Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games.

They were followed by the Paralympians’ parade, who will compete in the city for 11 days. The Games are expected to have the second-highest attendance of any Paralympic Games, after London in 2012, according to the Associated Press.

Andrew Parsons, president of the International Paralympic Committee, said in a statement to the AP: “We are in the heart of the city,” adding: “The symbolism behind this is like the city of Paris giving our athletes a giant hug.”
