“She made it all up”

Donald Trump claimed Tuesday that Kamala Harris “made up” the story about a member of his campaign team who got into a physical altercation with an official at Arlington National Cemetery last week.

The cemetery has already confirmed that an incident occurred during the Republican candidate’s visit on August 26 for a wreath-laying ceremony marking the third anniversary of a bombing that killed US soldiers during the withdrawal from Afghanistan. The US military separately confirmed that Trump’s staff “suddenly shoved” the female employee who was trying to enforce the cemetery’s rules that prohibit recording and photographing for political purposes.

The military also defended the cemetery official, saying her professionalism was “unfairly attacked” after Trump aides claimed in public statements that she was a “despicable individual” and “clearly suffering from a mental illness.” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung also claimed he had footage showing no physical confrontation occurred, but has not released it.

The woman in question reportedly chose not to file a complaint for fear of reprisals from Trump supporters.

“There was no conflict or ‘fight’ at Arlington National Cemetery last week,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Tuesday. “It was a fabricated story by Comrade Kamala and her disinformation team. She made it all up to make up for the fact that she and Sleepy Joe have BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS for the INCOMPETENT AFGHANISTAN withdrawal – THE MOST EMBARRASSING DAY IN US HISTORY!!!”

Trump went on to write that Harris and Biden “should have been in Arlington, not on a beach or studying for a debate.” Both Biden and Harris released statements honoring the victims of the Abbey Gate attack outside Kabul airport — which killed 13 U.S. service members — with White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby explaining that Trump’s visit to the cemetery had been a “personal invitation from families.” A White House official and a Harris aide told NBC News Sunday that Biden and Harris had not received similar invitations from Gold Star families.

Harris released on Saturday a statement on X accusing Trump of “desecrating sacred ground, all for a political stunt,” with his visit to the cemetery. Trump countered this past weekend by responding to Harris’ post with videos from relatives of those killed in the Abbey Gate bombing, in which the survivors defend Trump’s actions at the cemetery while criticizing Harris.

A joint statement of the families Trump shared said they were “appalled” by Harris’ “attempts to politicize Trump’s visit to the cemetery.” “President Trump was invited by us, the Gold Star families, to attend the solemn ceremonies commemorating the three-year anniversary of our children’s deaths,” the statement said. “He was there to honor their sacrifice, but Vice President Harris shamefully twisted this sacred moment into a political ploy.”

Arlington National Cemetery said last week that federal law prohibits filming and photography for political purposes in Section 60, an area of the site where recent American casualties are buried. The military later confirmed that Trump’s campaign had been informed of the rules before his visit, adding that cemetery officials “tried to ensure compliance with these rules” when they were overridden.

“Thank you (sic) to my friends, the GREAT GOLDS (sic) STAR FAMILIES, for revealing the TRUTH OF A BEAUTIFUL DAY OF HONOR,” Trump wrote in his message Tuesday. “It couldn’t have been a more beautiful moment – And there were no fights or problems, only in the minds of those who are destroying our Country!”
