Shohei Ohtani throws fit into dug-out after referee intervention

Have you ever seen Shohei Ohtani angry? The $700 million player rarely loses his temper, but one particular incident on Wednesday night rocked him.

Game 4 between the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers had everyone on edge, from the fans to the players. The Dodgers were poised for another disappointing postseason exit until their bats woke up from desperation and went on offense early in the elimination game.

The Dodgers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth and came close to a 6-0 lead if not for an inadvertent play at third base, where the umpire stopped a fair ball intended for Ohtani to score from third base.

With two out for LA and Ohtani waiting at third base, Teoscar Hernandez hit a nice ball to third base that could have gotten away from Padres third baseman Manny Machado had it not been for umpire Mark Ripperger’s “defense” on had been third base.

The ball ricocheted off the ball, which Machado scooped up and threw home to get Ohtani out.

After being tagged home by Kyle Higashioka, Ohtani expressed his frustration in the dugout, knowing he had missed a scoring opportunity and allowed the Dodgers to take a six-run lead.

Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts also disagreed with the ump’s inadvertent defense.

Ohtani’s trip around the bases was all for naught.

But you can’t blame the referee for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Similar to Tuesday’s game, the crowd (particularly in LA) became enraged over an accidental sequence that went the Padres’ way.

All that time in Anaheim has helped Ohtani build up some patience, but even the unicorn can lose his cool.

The Dodgers shutout the Padres 8-0, forcing a Game 5 scheduled for Friday.
