SMU sweeps No. 2 Nebraska in surprising women’s volleyball

Unranked SMU pulled off a stunning upset against No. 2 Nebraska on Tuesday night, defeating the Huskers 25-23, 25-21, 25-18 before a record crowd of 6,773 at Moody Coliseum. The win marked Nebraska’s first loss of the season and its first defeat to an unranked team since 2017.

The Mustangs dominated from the service line, with seven aces compared to Nebraska’s lone ace. Senior opposite hitter Naya Shime was instrumental in SMU’s victory, with nine kills and five blocks. Middle blocker Nnedi Okammo added a towering presence at the net, with nine blocks to stifle the Huskers’ attack.

Despite Nebraska leading 21-16 in the first set, SMU mounted a fierce comeback, winning nine of the next 11 points to take the set 25-23. The Huskers struggled to regain momentum for the remainder of the match, hitting just .171 as a team and committing 11 service errors.

FINAL STATS: SMU’s Surprise Win Over Nebraska

SMU closed out the match with a 12-4 run in the third set to secure their first sweep of the season and a milestone victory in their debut season as members of the ACC. Nebraska, now 3-1, will look to bounce back against The Citadel on Thursday, while SMU hosts Milwaukee on Thursday.
