Up to a foot of snow will reach high elevations of southwestern Pennsylvania, as well as mountains in West Virginia and Maryland, through Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Pennsylvania is among the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states experiencing winter weather Thursday, including heavy rain and up to a foot of snow at higher elevations. Winter weather advisories are in effect for parts of New York, West Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and several other areas.

Snow in the forecast: Cold temperatures, winter storm warnings in the Northeast

In several northeastern states, daily high temperatures dropped into the 50s and 40s on Thursday, compared to the 60s and 70s on Wednesday. Some areas are under winter storm warnings and freeze watches into the weekend. Meanwhile, some coastal areas in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic are expected to experience temperatures in the 30s and 40s through Saturday, accompanied by precipitation of about an inch, the weather service said.
