Purdue football falls under the state of Michigan

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Purdue football certainly had its chances Friday night.

But like games two through 10, game 11 ended with Boilermaker disappointing.

The Boilermakers had the ball in the final minutes with a chance to tie – or win – against Michigan State on Friday night at Spartan Stadium.

Just as has been the case all season, Purdue made too many mistakes to overcome in a 24-17 loss to the Spartans.

Hudson Card recorded his second 300-yard game as a Boilermaker, but it was the 75 yards that didn’t count after slipping through Jahmal Edrine’s fingertips with 5:18 to go that seemed to ultimately seal Purdue’s fate.

The Boilermakers finally turned the ball over on downs and Michigan State converted a fourth-and-1 with 1:55 to go, sending Purdue to a 10th straight loss.

Purdue Football’s mistakes are costly early

Nose tackle Mo Omonode had to travel from the middle of the field to the sideline on a third-and-17 and ultimately became the last resort that forced Michigan State into a field goal early in the second quarter.

That play looked important when Purdue got the ball down 10-3. Two plays later, Michigan State blew up a handoff in the backfield. Devin Mockobee fumbled and the Spartans recovered.

Still, the Purdue defense put Michigan State up again two plays later on third-and-17, helped by Trey Smith making a small tackle in the backfield. An errant pass from Aidan Chile was picked up by Dillon Thieneman, returned deep into Spartan territory and looked like a game-changing moment.

Instead, the play was negated when Tarrion Grant was flagged for pass interference. Another two plays and another third down for Michigan State later turned into a first down when Jeffrey M’Ba shoved a Michigan State player and was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Nathan Carter scored on a two-yard run.

Purdue had a bad snap that was mishandled on a 30-yard field goal attempt on the ensuing sequence, leading to a blocked kick.

Michigan State piles on Purdue’s misery in the first half

That blocked Freehill field goal attempt was the latest misery in a season full of first halves.

After being defeated 24-3 by the Spartans on Friday night, Purdue has now been outscored 208-53 in the first half of this season. Keep in mind that Purdue led 21-0 at halftime against Indiana State on August 31. Against ten FBS opponents, Purdue’s first half lead was 208-32.

Freehill’s 40-yard field goal with 9:17 to go in the first quarter marked the first first-quarter points for Purdue in five road games this season. Purdue has only 13 points in the first quarter all season and its lone touchdown came in the season opener.
