Soto home run in ALCS Game 4, live updates

A two-pitch blip, or a long, epic series about to unfold?

The New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians might be asking themselves that question after the Guardians were one to fall into a 3-0 hole in this American League Championship Series. But Jhonkensy Noel’s pinch-hit, tying homer, followed by David Fry’s walk-off shot an inning later, brought life to this ALCS.

Cleveland’s 7-5 win at Progressive Field cut New York’s lead in this ALCS to 2-1, but the Yankees can still take another commanding lead in Friday night’s Game 4.

Luis Gil will make his first career postseason start, opposed by Cleveland’s Gavin Williams.

New York has used left-handed hitters against Williams as it moved Jazz Chisholm to fourth and reinstated first baseman Anthony Rizzo and catcher Austin Wells. The Guardians, meanwhile, are giving a second straight start to both right fielder Daniel Schneemann and catcher Austin Hedges.

Game 5 is Saturday night at 8:08 ET, from Progressive Field.

Giancarlo Stanton suppressed any idea of an uprising in Cleveland with one move.

The New York Yankees’ fantastic postseason continued in impressive fashion on Friday when he hit a three-run homer off Guardians relief ace Cade Smith to give the Yankees a 6-2 lead in the sixth inning of Game 4.

With the Yankees holding a 3-2 lead and the Guardians rejuvenated with their heroics in winning Game 3, Stephen Vogt tagged the dominant Smith to pitch the sixth. But he issued a walk to Juan Soto, and Aaron Judge scorched a fastball on the first pitch for a single that came off the bat at 110 miles per hour.

After a rare sacrifice bunt from a cleanup hitter, Jazz Chisholm, Stanton followed by blasting a 1-2 fastball 400 feet into the left field stands for a 6-2 lead.

The Yankees are 12 outs away from taking a 3-1 ALCS lead.

The New York Yankees have a slim lead: 3-2 over the Cleveland Guardians through four innings of ALCS Game 4. But they also have the upper hand in another way.

Starter Luis Gil survived a significant amount of traffic and made it through four innings, getting through the fourth in his first clean frame of the night. Meanwhile, the Guardians had to dip into their bullpen in the third inning, replacing starter Gavin Williams with lefty Erik Sabrowski to ensure Juan Soto — who homered earlier — couldn’t see the righty starter again.

As the fifth inning begins, the Guardians are down to their third pitcher, Eli Morgan. Gil is still there, although the top of Cleveland’s lineup looms, maybe not for long.

With two outs in the top of the second inning, Yankees catcher Austin Wells hit a solo homer to center field against Cleveland starter Gavin Williams, extending New York’s lead to 3-1.

There’s virtually no way the Cleveland Guardians and New York Yankees can top their pulsating Game 3 of the American League Championship Series. Yet Game 4 started exactly as the last one ended: with a two-run homer.

Juan Soto hit his second home run of the series, a 400-foot shot off Guardians starter Gavin Williams, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead after one inning on Friday.

Williams, making his first start in 19 days, immediately ran into foul trouble, giving up a single to the red-hot Gleyber Torres before running into Soto, who hit a 98 mph fastball into the right field stands at Progressive Field.

But Yankees starter Luis Gil, like Williams in his first appearance since September, gave half of that back. He walked leadoff hitter Steven Kwan and gave up a double to Kyle Manzardo. But Gil would only yield a sacrifice fly by Jose Ramirez to preserve the Yankees’ lead.
