This is a current news item that will be updated.

The Washoe County School District released few details Wednesday about what caused a lockdown at Sparks High.

According to a message sent to families by Principal Cynthia Waddell, there was unrest among students near the school on 15th Street in Sparks.

The school with approximately 1,200 students was locked down around 12:40 p.m. and reopened about 30 minutes later.

The school decided to “restrict student movement on campus,” the district said.

The district said a student was expelled from the middle school. There was no immediate response if any injuries or arrests were linked to the incident.

Full message from Sparks High

Good afternoon, Sparks High School families –

This is a message on behalf of Principal Cynthia Waddell, to share important information with you:

Today there was a student nuisance near our campus. We decided to restrict students’ movement on campus as school police and staff members were monitoring student behavior. A student has been safely removed from our campus.

The school was placed on lockdown and we are working closely with school police as officers continue their investigation.

We hope that this prompt communication of the facts will help alleviate unnecessary rumors that could cause fear and anxiety for our students, families, staff and community members.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions/concerns about this incident or if you have any other concerns.

As always, thank you for your support of Sparks High School.
