Standings and Matchups to Make the MLB Playoffs

play

This story has been updated to reflect the situation as of 1:03 p.m. ET on Wednesday, September 18.

With the MLB postseason just around the corner, the teams that will compete for this year’s World Series are starting to come into focus. However, many teams have yet to secure their spot. This includes the New York Yankees.

Despite having the best record in the American League, the Yankees could still fall out of the postseason. With 13 games left in the regular season, it’s unlikely, but mathematically possible.

Their path to an AL East title is longer and tougher, but still a possibility as we approach the end of the season. This is the Yankees’ magic number.

MLB Rankings: Yankees and Aaron Judge get comfortable in AL East penthouse

What’s the magic number for the Yankees to reach the 2024 MLB postseason?

  • Yankees reach MLB postseason: 2
  • Yankees win AL East: 8 (can be 7 if NYY beats BAL in the last series)

Considering that the Yankees currently hold a three-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East with 12 games remaining for both teams, the Yankees would need at least nine wins/Orioles losses to finish the regular season with the same record as Baltimore. However, in that scenario, it is highly likely that Baltimore would hold the tiebreaker.

The Orioles and Yankees have one final three-game series between them, scheduled for September 24-26. If the Orioles were to win just one of those games, they would hold the tiebreaker over the Yankees, meaning the Orioles would be crowned AL East champions if both teams finished the regular season with equal records. Therefore, the surefire magic number for the Yankees to win the AL East is ten.
