Stargazers capture ‘comet of the century’ hovering over Hawaii

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – This weekend, stargazers from Hawaii witnessed what some are calling the “comet of the century.”

The comet is now making its closest approach on a return journey to Earth.

Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is expected to come within 45 million miles of Earth, NASA said.

According to NASA, the comet will initially appear low on the western horizon in the glow of twilight, about 45 minutes after sunset, every day from October 12 through the end of the month.

Here are some photos of the comet that HNN viewers sent to us:

It should be at its best for viewing early this week and will be easily visible, Sky and Telescope said.

However, if you miss it, you may miss your chance. NASA says the comet won’t pass by again for 80,000 years.
