Steelers plan to start Russell Wilson over Justin Fields on Sunday night vs. Jets

Six games and four wins into the season, Pittsburgh is making a move at quarterback.

The Steelers plan to play Russell Wilson on Sunday night against the New York Jets over Justin Fields, who has started each of Pittsburgh’s previous games this season, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Saturday.

NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported the impending move on Tuesday, but head coach Mike Tomlin said he had yet to make a decision. Pittsburgh is coming to the conclusion that was reported, assuming a now-healthy Wilson, though it’s still a hugely confusing situation for many.

Rapoport added that while Wilson is expected to play much of Sunday’s starter, Fields is also expected to play at some capacity.

According to NFL Research, this is the first time in the Super Bowl era that an uninjured starting quarterback has led his team to a 4-2 record or better and not started his team’s seventh game.

While Fields has hardly shined, the former Chicago Bears first-round pick has become a favorite of his teammates, throwing five touchdowns to just one interception and also rushing for five scores, which is tied for fifth in the NFL. Pittsburgh ranks 26th in total offense and the hope is that Wilson can ignite the group, especially a passing game that is 28th in yards.

Wilson was named the team’s QB1 during training camp, but was inactive for the first six games due to a calf injury. For the first time this year, Wilson is absent from the injury report this week and Tomlin has opted to join the former Super Bowl champion in the starting lineup.
