Although “Texas Secretary of Culture” is ultimately an unofficial title, it is a Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey takes seriously. And as far as that Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian As for the actor, he’s an authentic Longhorns diehard.

McConaughey, a Texas native and UT alum, is a frequent visitor to Texas games and events and will be on hand Saturday when Texas hosts Georgia. But Sarkisian said Friday on “The Pat McAfee Show” that the actor’s fandom did not fade away with the team’s success.

“Games like this are all coming out,” Sarkisian said. “But I will say this about Matthew McConaughey: It doesn’t matter. It’s week in, week out, that guy has our backs.”

The head coach explained more about the passion McConaughey has and his appreciation for it.

“I love it,” Sarkisian said. “And you know, Matthew has been a great pillar of Texas football for a long time. And so through the good times, through some of the tough times, that guy has been there and supported this thing.

To reinforce Sarkisian’s point, McAfee recalled a relatively recent interaction with McConaughey that showed his commitment to being ready for Texas.

It was early in Texas’ dominant win against Michigan in Week 2 and McAfee spotted McConaughey on the sidelines in the Big House.

“I saw him in Michigan on the sidelines and I didn’t know because I had no service because there are so many people and phones – I have to figure it out. So I couldn’t receive text messages or updates. I think he was very close to missing the kick-off and I think it was because he was very ill. … He gets there and I say, ‘God, you look so good.’ And he says, ‘I lost like 10 pounds in the last 24 hours, brother,'” McAfee said.

And that led Sarkisian to another McAfee-McConaughey moment, when the duo was on the ESPN cameras as Texas hit a long touchdown pass against Alabama last season in Tuscaloosa.

“How about last year at the ‘Bama game,’ you stood there and the touchdown started (Xavier) Worthy right in front of you guys. That’s a heck of a shot, man,” Sarkisian said.

“And it’s really happiness. Pure joy,” said McAfee.
