Stevie Nicks makes ‘SNL’ comeback with new song ‘The Lighthouse’

play

Stevie Nicks returned to “Saturday Night Live” for the first time in nearly 41 years on Oct. 12 with Ariana Grande as host.

The last time the Phoenix-born Fleetwood Mac singer appeared as a musical guest on “SNL” was in December 1983, when he sang “Stand Back” and “Nightbird,” the first and third singles from “The Wild Heart.” She lived in Paradise Valley at the time.

It was clear that Nicks’ voice has aged a bit since that last “SNL” appearance, but she carried it well, helping to underline the seriousness of her performance.

Nicks sang ‘Edge of Seventeen’ with guitarist Waddy Wachtel

In the days leading up to the broadcast, “SNL” released a video of Bowen Yang and Grande attempting to coax a vote out of Nicks, who didn’t take the bait when they referenced the lyrics to Fleetwood Mac’s “Gypsy,” but did . them with a little “Landslide” when referring to the lyrics.

As it turns out, Nicks didn’t revisit any Fleetwood Mac songs on “SNL” on Saturday. She did, however, dust off “Edge of Seventeen,” perhaps the most beloved of her solo hits (which finished third on our ranking of her best songs) at the helm of a band that featured Waddy Wachtel on the signature guitar riff he played. on the plate.

That was Nicks’ second song.

Stevie Nicks debuted with pro-choice anthem ‘The Lighthouse’

First, she treated viewers to the live premiere of the pro-choice anthem she released two weeks before taking the stage, looking suitably angry as she leaned into the righteous indignation of the lyrics of “The Lighthouse,” which she sets the tone. with: “I have my scars, you have yours / Don’t let them take your power / Don’t leave it alone in the last hours / They take your soul, they take your power.”

As Nicks explained the inspiration for the song on social media: “I wrote this song a few months after Roe v. Wade was overturned. It seemed like overnight people were saying, ‘What can we do as a collective force about this…’ For me it was writing a song.”

She wrote an early draft of “The Lighthouse” in September 2022.

‘The most important thing I ever do’

“I’ve been working on it ever since,” her post continued. “I’ve often said to myself, ‘This might be the most important thing I ever do. To stand up for the women of the United States and their daughters and granddaughters ~ and the men who love them.” This is an anthem.”

It’s a heavy message that can’t help but feel a little out of place amid the weirdness of “SNL.”

But the steely conviction and intensity of her performance made it clear that Nicks wasn’t about to waste the opportunity to deliver her message to the masses: playing nice for those who signed up for the laughs (not to mention the ‘ shut up and play your guitar” crowd on the right, where that message was destined to be greeted with derision).

In a way, it was a quintessential Stevie moment, a defiant act of staying true to who she is, regardless of what might have been the safer path from a career perspective. That’s part of the reason why her fans adore her so much. You always know you’re getting the real Stevie.
