Oregon with a validation win; Ole Miss with a validation loss

Nevada Sports Net columnist Chris Murray is one of 63 voters in the AP Top 25 college football poll. View his ballot from this week here.

On the rise

* Oregon: Saturday was tame as only three Top 25 teams lost – Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oklahoma – and each played non-home games against ranked foes. (Utah lost to unranked Arizona State on Friday.) No team moved up more than three spots, with LSU improving the most, from 17th to 14th after a win over Ole Miss. LSU started the season with a loss to USC, and has reeled off five straight wins to get back into the CFP picture. But Oregon is making headlines here after its one-point win over Ohio State. That gives the undefeated Ducks two Top 25 wins with wins over the Buckeyes and Boise State. Oregon’s remaining six games are much softer, with the biggest remaining tilt coming in Michigan. Navy (24) and Nebraska (25) are new on the ballot.

On autumn

* Ole ma’am: Ole Miss fans have been in my mentions because the Rebels were too low on my ballot. Coming into this week, I had Ole Miss ranked 19th, while the consensus ranking was ninth. That’s a big difference. But I was proven right when the Rebels lost their second game in three weeks, even though it was an overtime thriller at LSU, a tough place to play. Ole Miss fell to 5-2 with losses to LSU and 3-3 Kentucky with its best win over 3-3 South Carolina. I have the Rebels at number 25, but they will see a big dip in the overall polling. From ranked to unranked were Utah (No. 20 last week) and Oklahoma (No. 21).
