Homes and streets in Siesta Key, where Milton made landfall, flooded Thursday

Hurricane Milton left power outages, destruction and some fatalities in its wake after making landfall overnight Wednesday as a major category three hurricane.

The storm brought winds of more than 100 miles per hour and one-in-a-thousand-year rainfall. As much as 20 inches fell in some parts of Florida’s west coast, with heavy rains across the state and in nearby Cuba.

As it traveled inland across the Florida Peninsula, Milton maintained Category 1 strength with sustained winds of up to 90 mph. It once lost some power over land after its energy was fueled by the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Storm surges and tornadoes led to major flooding, with more expected in the coming days. Several people have been killedwith tornadoes in Lucie County claiming four lives before Milton made landfall.

Officials across Florida ordered evacuations as the storm approached, and more than three million homes and businesses were reported to have lost power overnight Wednesday.

As residents and first responders continue rescue operations and damage assessment, we take a look at the impact of Hurricane Milton in photos.
