Taylor Swift Responds to Fake Photo of Her ‘Supporting’ Trump

Taylor Swift said her support for Kamala Harris was partly due to Donald Trump sharing a fake photo of her. She has spoken openly about her fears around AI and disinformation during the election.

In an Instagram post announcing her support for Harris, Swift said she recently “found out that an AI of ‘me’ was posted on his site that falsely endorsed Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.”

“It really raised my fears around AI and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It made me realize that I need to be very transparent about my real plans for this election as a voter. The easiest way to combat misinformation is with the truth,” she said in a message sent minutes after the end of the debate between the Vice President and former President Trump.

Swift was likely referring to a Truth Social after made by Trump last month. The former president placed “I accept!” alongside four sets of images featuring mostly women in “Swifties for Trump” T-shirts.

The images also include an Uncle Sam-inspired image of Swift with the caption, “Taylor wants you to vote for Donald Trump.”

One set of images came from a post labeled “satire,” and several of the images showed typical AI markings. However, two of the images Trump shared appeared to be real, featuring actual Trump supporters Jenna Piwowarczyk.

The images sparked the ire of some Swifties, who encouraged the singer to sue the former president for the unauthorized use of her likeness.

Legal experts and celebrity lawyers previously told Business Insider that Swift could file a lawsuit over the image, alleging trademark infringement and false advertising, among other things. However, they expressed doubts about how successful the potential lawsuit would be.

The former president later attempted to distance himself from the footage. When asked about a potential lawsuit from Swift on Fox Business’ Evening Edit last month, Trump said he “didn’t know anything about” the footage, which he claimed was fabricated by others.

Trump said he did not create the images himself and called AI “very dangerous.”

Experts say AI is a problem in elections

Experts have long feared that widespread use of AI could wreak havoc during democratic elections. Deepfakes, AI-generated text, and hyper-targeted ads could blur the lines between fact and fiction, making it harder for voters to discern what is reliable information.

While Swift has been vocal about American political issues in the past, she had not yet endorsed either 2024 ticket when Trump shared the questionable images. She previously supported the Biden-Harris campaign in 2020 and accused Trump of “fanning the fires of white supremacy and racism.”

Many fans have been eagerly awaiting Swift’s take on the 2024 election. A grassroots group called Swifties For Kamala, which was formed to mobilize support for the Democratic ticket, has more than 60,000 followers on X.

The endorsement will also come as a welcome surprise to many Democrats. The singer has an American mature fan base estimated to be nearly as large as the 2020 presidential election tally, giving her a unique cultural influence. And just an hour after the Harris-Walz campaign got Taylor Swift’s endorsement, It started with the sale of friendship bracelets inspired by the singer.

Trump representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, which was made outside normal business hours.
