Ted Danson says Woody Harrelson’s first day on Cheers involved bar fights and carjacking

Woody Harrelson made a wild first impression on Ted Danson.

During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Livethe Cheers alum, 76, recalled the first time he met his former friend, 63, on the NBC sitcom.

“He’s a freakish creature,” Danson began about Harrelson. “He’s amazing. He’s such a bundle of contradictions. I think the first day we met him on Cheers – we had been filming together for three years – and he joined us.”

When the Hunger Games alum was involved in a “bar fight” and was “carjacked” the same day. Danson’s first impression of him was “Oh dear God, that’s who that is” until Harrelson turned and asked, “Can you look at this poem I wrote?” ?”

“It’s the most beautiful poem you’ve ever read,” he added. “And he says, ‘Would you like to come see the play I wrote?’ …and it’s a brilliant play. You can’t put that guy in a box.”

“One of my favorites Cheers stories is, he’s waiting for him, and he had to be about 30 minutes late for rehearsal,” The right place star kept remembering. “And we said, ‘Well, who cares?’ And someone came running in and said, “Woody called.”

“That’s the whimsical side of Woody, but also the beautiful side. He just bites off these big chunks of life,” says the The person within star laughed. “He’s just amazing.”

This isn’t the first time Danson has reminisced about the wild times he shared with Harrelson Cheers.

On the duo’s August 14 episode Where everyone knows your name podcast, Danson, Harrelson and their former costar George Wendt revealed that they once played “hooky” and experimented with hallucinogens.

Back in the day, John Ratzenburger, who played Cliff Clavin, invited the cast to sail to Catalina Island for the day. While Kelsey Grammer slept in a bunk bed on the boat, Harrelson offered Danson some medicine.

“We hadn’t had breakfast yet, so I was quite hungry and ate, I think, an extraordinary amount of mushrooms,” Danson recalls. “There was still a huge swell. So people who don’t use mushrooms would pretty much get seasick. But I was just sitting there getting more and more panicked about whatever you get – stoned or whatever it is – from mushrooms,”

Harrelson, who played Woody Boyd Cheerssaid Danson looked “like a hologram” of himself, adding, “I thought you were really – you just weren’t breathing at all” before Danson called the trip “the worst four hours of my life.”

Cheers is streaming in full on Hulu and Paramount+. Meanwhile, Danson’s new series, A man withinpremieres on Netflix on November 21.
