In Baker, Montana, temperatures dropped nearly 40 degrees in just over 24 hours after a cold front moved through the region Tuesday night, bringing blustery conditions Wednesday.

The sudden drop in temperatures comes just a day after the same city broke its highest daily temperature record on Tuesday, when the temperature rose to 35 degrees Celsius at around 1:11 p.m. On Wednesday, the temperature was 13 degrees Celsius at 3:49 p.m., a difference of 38 degrees Celsius.

“A pair of daily records were set yesterday. Baker’s high of 95° broke the old record of 92° set in 2000, and Livingston’s precipitation of 0.89″ tied the record set in 1975,” according to the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Billings, Montana, placed Wednesday morning to X, formerly Twitter.

NWS meteorologist Logan Torgerson said Newsweek that the cold front that passed through on Tuesday brought with it a thunderstorm, leading to a sudden drop in temperatures as the low-pressure area produced a lot of precipitation.

The storm has already produced up to 8 inches of snow in the higher elevations of the Absaroka/Beartooth Mountains west of Baker. The storm also brought widespread rainfall to the region, although Baker only saw 0.2 inches of rain. Other areas in the Billings forecast region, such as Park and Yellowstone Counties, have already received more than 3 inches of rain, according to an NWS report. Torgerson said the storm produced “an abnormal amount of precipitation” for this time of year.

“Heavy wet snow. Additional snowfall up to two inches. Highest snowfall above 9,000 ft. Wind gusts up to 50 mph,” a winter storm warning for the area reads. “High mountain recreation will be impacted by heavy snow.”

The warning is expected to remain in effect until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday.

In addition to the warning, several weather advisories have been issued for the Billings weather area due to the storm, including a high wind warning, a flood warning, and several other advisories.

The normal high for Baker this time of year is 73 degrees, Torgerson said, and temperatures are expected to return to normal “pretty quickly.”

“Tomorrow temperatures in Baker will be in the low 70s,” he added. “On Friday they’ll be back to above normal temperatures in the low 70s, close to 80.”

A six- to 10-day temperature forecast released by the NWS Climate Prediction Center shows that all of Montana has a chance of above-average temperatures from September 23 through 27. Montana also has a lower-than-average chance of precipitation during the same period.
