Heavy rainfall, gusty winds and cooler temperatures

BILLINGS — The high, moisture-rich low pressure system will continue to move through the region Wednesday, bringing heavy rainfall, especially in Rosebud County and areas to the west, where accumulations of up to 1 inch are likely. Some areas could experience extreme rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding in areas prone to it.

This dynamic system could also bring over a foot of snowfall to areas above 10,000 feet in the Beartooths and Absarokas by Wednesday night. Wind gusts up to 50 mph are also expected. A winter storm warning is in effect. The Beartooth Highway remains closed at this time. Check MDOT and WYDOT for the latest updates.

In addition to being wet, Wednesday will also be quite windy with gusts of up to 60 mph possible for much of the area. A high wind warning is in effect. Winds will decrease but remain strong into Thursday. Stronger winds could linger in eastern Montana into Thursday afternoon.

A cold front associated with the low will cool daytime temperatures to the 50s and 60s for much of the region Wednesday, then remain in the 60s and 70s for the rest of this week and into next week. Nighttime temperatures will be in the 40s and 50s through Friday morning, 30s and 40s Saturday and Sunday mornings, then mainly in the 40s for the week ahead.

The low pressure area will move out of the northeast on Thursday, bringing mostly dry conditions back into the forecast. Several fast-moving disturbances will bring the chance of daily showers into the forecast on Friday through early next week.
