The ending of ‘Agatha All along’ brings even more witchy shenanigans to the MCU

Warning: This article contains spoilers from Agatha all the time episodes 8 and 9.

No, Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff didn’t magically appear Agatha all the time. No, there wasn’t a cameo with a major character, like Mephisto, who was the subject of season-long fan theories. But the end of Agatha all the time confirmed some other hypotheses from the Marvel watcher community and laid the stones for the (witch) road ahead – including perhaps the upcoming series Vision quest.

The first big reveal: Ding Dong, the witch is dead. Agatha Harkness by Kathryn Hahn, that is. But it’s a move inspired by Marvel comics.

In episode 8, “Follow Me My Friend / To Glory at the End”, Agatha makes a pact with “not Rio” Death (Aubrey Plaza). Billy (Joe Locke) is an abomination, says Death, because he has broken the laws of nature by returning to the living by inhabiting the body of the very dead William “Billy” Kaplan. Death wants him, but she is unable to seize him by force. Even worse, she knows he has the ability to do the same for his twin brother Tommy. So Agatha agrees to let Billy go voluntarily in exchange for her own life.

The remaining trio – Agatha, Billy and Jen (Sasheer Zamata) – reach the end of the Witches’ Way to undergo their final trial. At first they think they’ve been walking in circles because they come across the same shoes they put on the ground at the beginning of this whole journey. But when they put their feet in their shoes, they wake up in body bags in a morgue.

Jen is the first to leave the road unscathed. She discovers that Agatha, who has a history of performing random spells for high-paying clients, was the one who tied her up in the first place. She performs the dissolving chant and regains her magic. And because that was her purpose on the Road, she disappears back into the real world. Agatha then feels sorry for Billy and decides to do the same for him. She guides the teen to give himself what he wants from the Road. Billy telepathically finds an available body into which he can place Tommy’s soul. In this case, it’s a child being drowned by a group of bullies in a prank gone wrong. (We don’t see his face, so Marvel has the opportunity to cast someone potentially famous.) Billy also then disappears from the Road and his desire is fulfilled.

That leaves Agatha. She saves herself from the trial and returns to Westview, where she must face Death himself. Billy enters, now dressed in a superhero costume similar to the comic book, and willingly gives some of his magic to Agatha so she can fight Death. Unfortunately it’s not enough. No one can conquer Death. So Agatha sacrifices herself to save Billy. After all, all Death needs is one soul.

But Agatha all the time isn’t done with the twists at this point. As Billy settles back into his life and the storyline transitions into the finale episode “Maiden Mother Crone,” he discovers the hard truth. The Witches’ Way was never real. It started as a song about “the windy road” that Agatha taught her son Nicholas Scratch to sing centuries ago. The lyrics became “down the Witches’ Road” as a rip-off. Nicholas would perform the ballad in public to make money and help his mother lure other witches into her clutches to absorb their power.

Agatha was very willing to do the same to Jen, Alice (Alice Wu-Gulliver) and Lilia (Patti LuPone) at the beginning of the series… until Billy accidentally used his magic to reshape reality and start the Witches’ Way to create. as a means of escaping the Salem Seven. Billy realizes that all trials are based on things in his own room. It’s whole Wizard of Oz…even when he realizes that Wizard of Oz figurines inspired Episode 7’s trial.

Episode 9 reveals more about Agatha’s backstory with Death, who came for Nicholas when he was due to die in childbirth, but gave him more time at the behest of a desperate Agatha. When time was up, Death came to take Nicholas in his sleep, leaving her lover sad to wake and setting Agatha on her own evil path to steal the magic of every witch she could over the years.

Agatha all the timeIn the end of the story, the titular Harkness now appears to Billy as a ghost and, despite some lingering pains between them, decides to join him as a phantom guide as he now tries to find his brother Tommy. It’s clear that showrunner Jac Schaeffer and the Marvel team were inspired Scarlet Witch: Witches’ Waya comic book series from the past decade in which the spirit of Agatha Harkness served as mentor and guide to Wanda Maximoff as she traversed a mystical dimension known as, yes, the Witch’s Way. The MCU is now setting up Hahn’s Agatha to fill the same role, but for young Billy.

The final shot sees Billy and ghost Agatha hunting for Tommy. We wouldn’t be surprised at all if the reincarnated Tommy now becomes a major player Vision questthe upcoming Vision-centric series that spawned WandaVision. Schaeffer was originally involved Vision questwhich is now led by Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard). The show follows Bettany’s “white Vision,” the version of Vision that SWORD originally built to subdue Wanda, but who eventually set out on his own to discover himself and grapple with his newly discovered memories of the previous Vision.

“(Matalas) and Jac have spoken, and that show is really a love letter to everything Jac has built before and also continues in a way that is unique to that filmmaker,” Brad Winderbaum, the head of Marvel Television, said. Entertainment weekly before the Agatha all the time season premiere. “There’s a long tradition in Marvel, whether it was (director) Shane Black taking over from (Iron man And Ironman 2 filmmaker) Jon Favreau Iron man 3or the Russians taking over (from Joss Whedon). Avengers. Like the comics, these franchises benefit from different storytellers and different artists playing with the material in new ways.”

Like the first WandaVision sequel series that featured Billy’s return would reason that the next one would feature Tommy’s return. However, the one thing we know for sure is that Bettany will return as this version of Vision Vision quest. No release date has been set beyond a general timeline of 2026, but filming is expected to begin next year.

We also know that the MCU is in the process of introducing the Young Avengers, a team of younger Marvel heroes from the comics, most of whom have direct ties to a main member of the Avengers. The end of 2023 The miracles showed Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) recruiting Hawkeye protégé Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to join a new team. Previously, the MCU introduced Elijah Richardson as Eli Bradley, the grandson of Super Soldier Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021); Jack Veal played the Kid Loki variant Loki (2021); Xochitl Gomez played the multiverse-hopping America Chavez Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022); Kathryn Newton starred as the size-changing Cassie Lang, Ant-Man’s teenage daughter Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023); and now we have Locke as Billy, aka Wiccan.

Tommy is another member of Young Avengers in the comics, named Speed, given his speedster skills are similar to those of his uncle, Pietro.

Future Marvel plans have not yet been announced, but there are several ‘untitled’ films on the release calendar. Additionally, Winderbaum told EW that Marvel is “developing a lot of shows at the same time now. So in a sense we’re making television more in a traditional style, where we’re going to write multiple pilots and show Bibles before we decide what we want. produce it and actually bring it to the screen, which gives us the opportunity to experiment and also plan all kinds of different Marvel sandboxes.”

At least it seems like it WandaVision sandbox continues to grow.
