He revealed via social media after the Paramount Network announced the official return date that he will not be returning for the final episodes of the western series.

“I wanted to contact you and let you know after a year and a half of work Horizon and do all things that are necessary, and think about them Yellowstonethat beloved series that I love, that I know you love, I just realized that I won’t be able to continue Season 5B or into the future,” he said. “It was something that really changed me. I loved it. And I know you loved it. And I just wanted to let you know that I’m not coming back and that I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop and seeing you in the movies.”

Costner shed some light on what happened behind the scenes in negotiating a new contract for his role and changes to the show’s arc.

In a recent interview with People, the actor expressed his disappointment that none of his former co-stars came to his defense when the original story surrounding his absence was solely due to his inflexible filming schedule for Horizon: an American saga. Luke Grimes told The Independent he understood the decision.

“I didn’t have a good feeling about it last year because of the way they talked about it. It wasn’t truthful. So now I talk a little bit about what the real truth of it was. I have signed for seasons five, six and seven,” he told Deadline. “In February they signed a new contract after two or three months of negotiations. They wanted to remake that one, and instead of seasons six and seven it was 5A and 5B, and maybe we’ll do six. They couldn’t make that. Horizon was in the middle, but Yellowstone was the first position. I pass (Horizon) in mind. They just kept shifting their holes.”

Will this be the last season of Yellowstone?

Until the end of August 2024, season 5B of the western drama series was thought to be the last, but there is a chance for a season 6 where certain characters will continue.

This series follows the journey of Dutton’s ancestors west through the Great Plains to unclaimed frontiers. Sheridan had that entire series blocked out in his mind in one season, and the end of the season doesn’t really leave room for another season as Sam Elliott’s character dies by suicide.

“The story I heard is that Bob Bakish looked at it and said, ‘Wait a minute, she dies! They’re all going to die? What do we do in season two?’” Sheridan told Deadline. “I said, there is no season two. They’re like, there better be a damn season two because we already picked it up. I’m sitting here saying, ‘Guys, everyone’s dead.’
