The most encouraging part of the Bills’ Week 2 win over the Dolphins is being overlooked

The Buffalo Bills pulled off a convincing win over their division rival Miami Dolphins on Thursday night. They dominated the game consistently, but still came out on top 31-10 as calm returned to a chaotic night in South Florida.

Lost in all the late-game commotion surrounding Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s concussion (hopefully he has a quick recovery) and Bills quarterback Josh Allen having his worst statistical game against the Dolphins and still coming away with the win, is an under-noticed, yet important stat that has gone largely unnoticed in all of the postgame reporting.

The Bills were assessed just ONE five-yard penalty in the entire game. The penalty came with 8:01 left in the second quarter when Bills right tackle Spencer Brown was assessed a holding penalty on a 2nd-and-11.

Other than that, the Bills didn’t take any additional penalties all night. All sides of the ball played near-perfectly in terms of discipline and keeping a cool head, even when challenged in that regard when Dolphins (and former Buffalo) safety Jordan Poyer landed a brutal hit on Khalil Shakir early in the game. What could have escalated into a brawl turned into nothing more than trash talk as the Bills kept their heads down and focused on winning the game.

This encouraging display of discipline comes after Buffalo committed nine penalties for 65 yards in its Week 1 win over Arizona. The Bills have had issues with the flag in the past, finishing in the top 10 in the league in penalties against in five of the last six seasons; they finished in the top five in two of those campaigns. It’s long been said that the only team that can consistently beat Buffalo is Buffalo; it didn’t get in its own way Thursday night.

It’s a testament to the culture in the locker room, a culture that has been built over the years by head coach Sean McDermott and reinforced by the personalities of the players. If the Bills can maintain this level of discipline all year long and maintain consistency on both sides of the ball despite injuries to cornerback Taron Johnson and linebackers Matt Milano and Terrel Bernard, the Bills could go further than anyone expected.
