Albany police responded to reports of the attack on Wednesday around 5:55 p.m. When officers arrived, they noticed the man was being bitten by the group of dogs, police said in a news release shared on the department’s Facebook.

To stop the attack, one of the responding officers drew his service weapon and shot at least one of the dogs, the Facebook post said.

The unidentified man died at the scene, police said.

Police rounded up all the dogs and placed them in a shelter, the statement said.

The investigation into the attack is active and ongoing, the department said.

According to the National Library of Medicine, approximately 30 to 50 people die from dog bites each year.
