The MTV Video Music Awards, taking place on Wednesday, September 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, have blessed us with some of the most shocking, unforgettable, and bizarre red carpet looks of all time — from Lil Kim’s custom purple pastie and Pamela Anderson’s pink fur hat to Aaliyah’s animal-print Roberto Cavalli look and Lady Gaga’s meat dress. Unlike formal red carpets like the Oscars or Golden Globes, there are no unspoken rules about what celebrities can and can’t do, so for people like us who enjoy messiness and chaos, this is easily the most entertaining awards show of the year. The hottie herself Megan Thee Stallion will host the show, following in the footsteps of last year’s host Nicki Minaj. The two are not on good terms at the moment (more on that here ), which could make things interesting.

It’s too early to tell, but this year’s nominees are Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Eminem, LISA, Olivia Rodrigo, Post Malone, Sabrina Carpenter, and SZA. Chappell Roan is also nominated, along with our favorite collaborators Billie Eilish and Charli XCX — let’s hope all three show up!

Starting strong with someone named Chippy (?) who literally wears a chip. Multiple points for guts; zero points for creativity.
