This is how the Secret Service responded to an apparent shooting of Trump

A group of US Secret Service agents foiled the second assassination attempt on Donald Trump on Sunday while the former president was playing golf.

Officers shot a suspect after seeing a gun barrel sticking through brush and a chain-link fence that lines the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, around 1:30 p.m.

Trump, who was not injured, was 300 to 500 feet away from the suspect when officers opened fire, law enforcement officials said. The suspect fled the scene and officers seized a rifle with a telescopic sight, two backpacks containing ceramic tiles and a GoPro video camera, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said at a news conference Sunday.

The suspect was arrested a short time later in a black Nissan SUV on I-95, about 45 miles north of the golf course. He was identified as Ryan Routh, 58, formerly of Hawaii and North Carolina.

Routh was charged in federal court Monday with possession of a firearm while a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number.

Sunday’s incident comes more than two months after a gunman shot Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. Trump’s ear was bloodied. One man died and two others were wounded. A Secret Service sniper killed the shooter.

Large spaces like outdoor gatherings and golf courses—both favorites of Trump—pose challenges for Secret Service protection. Golf courses, which have large, open areas with trees, shrubs or other obstructions, present unique challenges. They are often bordered by roads or public lands.

When Trump plays golf, he travels the course in a protective bubble of agents. They cover a range of three to five holes in front of and behind Trump, discreetly using high-tech tools for any sign of a potential attacker, USA TODAY reported.

Agents do this while trying to accommodate other golfers on the course. They typically try to blend in by wearing golf gear and riding in golf carts in front of and behind the former president as he plays, CNN reports. Other agents for Trump survey the grounds and surroundings as he and they drive around the course.

It was one of those officers who saw the gun in the bushes and opened fire, police said. An estimated four to six shots were fired by that officer and others. Court records later said the suspect did not fire.

According to NewsNation, the backpack containing ceramic tiles may have been used as a makeshift bulletproof vest.

Phone records show the suspect was in the area between 1:59 a.m. and 1:31 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

What weapon did the suspect have?

Routh, formerly of Hawaii and Greensboro, N.C., left behind a weapon described as an “SKS-style rifle.” The rifle’s serial number was crossed out, later court documents show.
