The older brother of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz posted scathing comments about the Democratic vice presidential candidate on social media before confirming to media that he does not support his brother’s left-wing views but intends to keep a low profile during the election campaign.

“I got a lot of feedback from my friends, old acquaintances, who thought I felt the same way my brother did on the issues, and I just tried to make that clear to my friends,” Jeff Walz, Tim Walz’s older brother, told News Nation this week. “I used Facebook, which was not the right platform to do that. But I will say, I disagree with his policies.”

Reports grew over the Labor Day weekend that Jeff was not a fan of the Minnesota governor’s left-wing Democratic policies, and he took to his Facebook account to air his views to friends and family. While the media reported on the social media posts over the holiday weekend, Jeff and the Harris campaign remained silent as the New York Post exclusively ran the headline, “Tim Walz’s older brother is ‘100% against all of his ideology,’ believes VP candidate is not ‘the type of character’ who should be making decisions about America’s future.”

After Jeff’s profile went viral on X, a Facebook user wrote a comment under one of his public posts urging him to “talk to your brother,” who is currently running to become Kamala Harris’ vice president.

“I am 100% against his entire ideology,” Jeff posted in a Facebook post Friday night, referring to his brother.

“My family was not notified that he had been selected and in the days that followed he was denied security,” he added.

“Help MAGA… Get on stage with President Trump and support him…; Help save this country…” one Trump supporter wrote on Jeff’s post.

“I’ve been thinking about doing something like this for a long time!” Jeff replied. “I’m torn between that and keeping my family out of it.”

“The stories I could tell,” he continued. “Not the type of character you want making decisions about your future.”

Jeff spoke to News Nation and explained that his Facebook posts were to make it clear to friends and family that he disagrees with his brother’s political views, and not to influence the opinions of voters.

“It was not my intention, nor our intention as a family, to put anything out there to influence the general public,” Jeff told the outlet on Tuesday.

He added that the “stories” he could tell about his brother were simply family stories, such as Tim throwing up in the car during family outings, and not stories of a political nature.

“Nobody wanted to sit with him because he got carsick and threw up on us, stuff like that,” Jeff said. “There’s really nothing to it. People assume there’s something else. There’s more stories like that, but I think that probably gives you the gist of it.”

Jeff and Tim Walz are estranged, having last seen each other at their younger brother’s funeral in 2016, the elder Walz said. Jeff’s wife texts the Minnesota governor “Happy Birthday,” and the couple had a brief phone conversation earlier this year when Tim called their mother.

“He called her cell phone and she handed me the cell phone. I spoke to him briefly,” Jeff explained.

“Harris’ team was vetting him for the vice president. He had asked me for some personal information; tax information and things like that, and I declined to give it at the time, but that was a two-minute conversation.”

Jeff said he will now keep a low profile during the election campaign and will not go into the campaign to support or oppose the Harris-Walz ticket.

“No further statements will be made to anyone, and we will not be campaigning for or against him or anything like that,” he said.

Governor Walz has three siblings: Jeff Walz, Craig Walz, and Sandy Dietrich.

Jeff moved to the East Coast after growing up in rural Nebraska; he now lives in Florida.

Craig was killed in 2016 by a falling tree during a storm while camping at a lake in Minnesota. He worked as a chemistry, calculus and geometry teacher in Minnesota, similar to Governor Walz’s background in education before entering politics in the early 2000s.

Dietrich reportedly lives in Nebraska and kept a low profile before and during her brother’s vice presidential campaign.

Jeff added that he “objected” to the way he found out Harris had chosen the Minnesota governor as her running mate.

“The only thing I objected to, and I stand by it 100 percent, was that we felt bad that we found out over the radio that he was the vice presidential nominee,” Jeff said. “And we felt that we probably should have had some warning and some sort of security, at least for a short period of time, because I think that’s a big thing.”

Governor Walz entered the political arena during the 2006 election cycle, when he ran to represent Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was elected that year and held the seat until 2019, when he was elected governor of the Gopher State.

Governor Walz was relatively unknown to voters outside Minnesota prior to speculation that Harris might pick him as her running mate. He has since come under fire from veterans and political opponents for issues including allegedly misrepresenting his decades in the Army National Guard before retiring in 2005, his handling of the 2020 Minnesota riots, and his spin on the Second Amendment.
