Tropical Depression 18 is expected to strengthen into Hurricane Rafael

MIAMI – Millions of people, from the Caribbean to the U.S. Gulf Coast, are keeping their eyes on Tropical Depression Eighteen as the system becomes more organized and is expected to become Hurricane Rafael in the coming days.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Tropical Depression Eighteen is likely to strengthen into Tropical Storm Rafael as it approaches Jamaica and will continue to strengthen as it travels north.

According to the NHC, Rafael is expected to be near or at hurricane strength as it moves toward the Cayman Islands and Cuba.

Tropical Depression Eighteen, previously referred to as Potential Tropical Cyclone Eighteen, has maximum sustained winds of 55 km per hour and is located approximately 310 kilometers south of Kingston, Jamaica.

Due to the potential threat posed by Tropical Depression Eighteen, a tropical storm warning was issued for Jamaica, a hurricane warning for the Cayman Islands and a hurricane warning for parts of Cuba.

According to the NHC, Tropical Depression Eighteen will move further north on Monday and turn northwest later in the day. This motion is expected in the coming days. Eighteen will be near or over Jamaica on Monday evening and near or over the Cayman Islands on Tuesday.

Tropical Depression Eighteen is then expected to approach Cuba on Wednesday.
