Trump continues to troll America and appoints Wrestling Executive to head the Department of Education

In the two weeks after that Donald Trump was re-elected president, he has tapped a series of individuals to serve as second-term advisors and Cabinet members whose common thread can be summed up in four words: What is that actually? Trump wants to put a rabid anti-vaxxer in charge of the country’s health, appoint a man accused of sex with a minor* as attorney general, and a former Real world cast member to lead the Transportation Department. It will come as no surprise that he has decided that someone best known as a wrestling leader should preside over the Ministry of Education.

Yes, on Tuesday night Trump announced that he had named the former president and CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment Linda McMahon as his pick for education secretary, saying McMahon will “make America number one in education in the world” by “sending education BACK TO THE STATES.” Trump has previously promised to dismantle the Department of Education, and while it seems unlikely he will actually be able to do that, he can certainly use his Cabinet picks to try to hack the agency through budget cuts and other measures.

As for McMahon, her qualifications to lead the Department of Education are unsurprisingly scant. If The Washington Post notes that in 2009 she once claimed to have a degree in education, but shockingly, that wasn’t actually true. Meanwhile, like every Trump nominee worth their salt, she has been linked to at least one sex scandal. Per New York Magazine:

In October Linda and (her husband) Vince McMahon were sued in a Maryland civil court by five former “ring boys” (actually gofers) who claimed they were abused by a former announcer and that the McMahons hired him despite knowing of his alleged behavior. The unnamed plaintiffs were just 12 years old when they were allegedly abused by broadcaster Mel Phillips, who died in 2012. Phillips was fired in 1988 but was rehired six weeks later with the condition that he stop abusing children at work, according to Business Insider. (He was fired permanently in 1990 after more alleged abuse cases.) “Vince and Linda sent Phillips back to the organization with the caveat that Mel must stay away from underage boys, stop associating with children and no longer had to chase children,” a witness said in a 1992 defamation lawsuit related to the incident.

The McMahons and WWE have denied any wrongdoing. Linda stepped down from her executive role with WWE in 2009 to run for Senate in Connecticut, resulting in failed bids in 2010 and 2012.

For his part, Vince McMahon has been personally accused of sexual misconduct and infidelity numerous times; in 2022, The Wall Street Journal reported that McMahon had paid out more than $12 million over sixteen years to keep the allegations against him quiet. Two years later, a former employee filed suit against McMahon, alleging that he offered her a job for sex and trafficked her to other men. The trial has since been put on hold as prosecutors investigate the human trafficking allegation. McMahon has denied all allegations.

In other Cabinet news, Trump on Tuesday named Dr. Mehmed Oz— long known for spreading health misinformation and snake oil — as his choice for administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, while Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick– who has embraced Robert F. Kennedy Jr.‘s anti-vaccination stance was tapped for Commerce Secretary.

*Matt Gaetz denies this.
