Trump must get rid of the West; Kamala Harris will join Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen

Former Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., today endorsed Harris for president, saying in a statement from the vice president’s campaign that he has “never voted for a Democrat for president until now.”

“More than thirty former Republican members of Congress have now publicly stated that they will not support the former president and will vote for VP Harris. I am proud to add my name to that list as I have already voted for Vice President Kamala Harris as our next President of the United States,” said Upton.

Upton said he is confident Harris will unite people, strengthen the economy and get things done for the country. He also said top Republicans have urged Trump to end the personal attacks, untruths and false claims about the 2020 election.

“Rather than taking that advice to heart, we see loose behavior unacceptable on most forums on an almost daily basis,” he said.

“I was at the U.S. Capitol on January 6 and witnessed firsthand the violence that attempted to co-opt the legitimate counting of each state’s electoral votes,” Upton said. “I spent time with the brave Capitol Police who did their utmost to protect and defend the Constitution on that terrible day. That day was a tragedy for our democracy, and Donald Trump is wrong to claim that everything he did was “completely appropriate” when he directly threatened the peaceful transition from one administration to another. He is unfit to serve as commander-in-chief again.”

Upton served in Congress from 1987 to 2023 and was among 10 Republicans in the House of Representatives who broke ranks and voted with Democrats to impeach Trump in the second impeachment after the January 6 insurrection.

Upton has held leadership positions in Congress, including as chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and vice chairman of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus.
