Trump picks Kristi Noem for Department of Homeland Security

President-elect Donald Trump has reportedly chosen South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem to lead the Department of Homeland Security.

Noem will serve as DHS secretary and oversee several federal organizations responsible for immigration to the U.S., including U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, if confirmed. Other agencies in its domain include the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Secret Service.

CNN first reported the development on Tuesday, citing two anonymous sources “familiar with the selection.” Various other media also reported on the selection.

The Argus Leader contacted Noem’s office Tuesday morning for confirmation of the Cabinet choice but did not receive a response.

The news comes after Trump announced Sunday that Tom Homan, who led aggressive immigration enforcement efforts as director of ICE during the president-elect’s last administration, will take on a “border czar” role.

Stephen Miller, another immigration hardliner, was also appointed as deputy chief policy officer.

Noem, a longtime Trump loyalist, was a staunch critic of immigration policies under the Biden-Harris administration. She often refers to the U.S.-Mexico border as a “war zone” and being “invasive” by migrants, and she has used the border situation several times over the years as a reason to send South Dakota National Guard troops to Texas send, at the expense of costs. of state funds.

Noem’s comments about the border have also targeted Native American communities in South Dakota. On January 31, South Dakota’s governor told South Dakota lawmakers that Mexican drug cartels were using Indian reservations in the state to “facilitate the spread of drugs in the Midwest.”

Noem also suggested without evidence that tribal leaders were “personally benefiting” from the cartels during a town hall event in Winner in March. She later called on tribes to “ban the cartels” in a state news release in April.

All nine Native American tribes of South Dakota formally supported Noem’s banishment from their lands following these comments, as well as statements she made about native children during a similar town hall in Mitchell.

Noem’s relationship with Trump changed for a while after she faced international criticism following media reports of her latest memoir, in which she said she personally killed a 14-month-old hunting dog and a goat she owned after a pheasant hunt in the 2000s .

She was once considered a candidate for Trump’s vice presidential pick, which ultimately went to Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance.
