Unai Emery says Aston Villa targeted Manuel Neuer in triumph over Bayern | Aston Villa

Unai Emery said Aston Villa targeted Manuel Neuer’s habits as a sweeper keeper after Jhon Durán lobbed the Bayern Munich goalkeeper to record a famous Champions League win.

Durán, coming on in place of Ollie Watkins, scored an excellent late winner to beat the six-time winners by one goal, replicating their 1982 European Cup final victory against the same team in Rotterdam.

Emiliano Martínez, who made an excellent save in second-half stoppage time to prevent Harry Kane from heading in the equalizer, said manager Unai Emery showed his players several clips of the Bayern captain positioning himself high on the pitch.

“In the analysis we made of them (Bayern), we were aware that we talked a lot about the fact that Neuer’s position is usually always high,” the Villa manager confirmed. “I knew how he (Durán) would shoot because he had this possibility with Neuer in mind.”

Martínez praised super sub Durán, who has scored five goals from the bench this season, including winners against West Ham, Everton and Leicester. “He came back this season with a different mentality,” said the Villa goalkeeper. “He is willing to work hard, he pushes Ollie to the limit, they can play together, he is a super sub. The first time he touched the ball he lobbed Neuer, one of the best goalkeepers in history.”

Villa striker Morgan Rogers added of Durán: “When I joined the club I had no idea he was 20. The way he plays makes him such a handful for defenders when he comes on the field with all that energy. He knows he gets that chance and supports himself 100%. Every game is exactly the same; he is the most chill, relaxed person I have ever met. He is a different animal when he plays.”

Bayern manager Vincent Kompany said Jamal Musiala did not start the match after reporting a problem after Sunday’s draw against Bayer Leverkusen. “We had great chances, but we couldn’t score a goal, that’s football,” Kompany said. “It is bitter to accept, but obviously this (defeat) will not be decisive for the outcome of our Champions League. We just have to keep working to make sure we are successful.”
