UNLV transfer QB Matthew Sluka leaves program after 3 games

UNLV starting quarterback Matthew Sluka announced via social media Tuesday night that he will no longer play for the Rebels and has opted to use his redshirt season.

The move allows the senior, who spent the first four seasons of his college career at Holy Cross, to re-enter the transfer market.

“I committed to UNLV based on certain representations made to me that were not honored after I enrolled,” Sluka said in a message on X. “Despite discussions, it became clear that these commitments would not be honored going forward. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program.”

Sluka was a record-setting dual-threat quarterback during his career at Holy Cross. He ranked first in FCS career passing efficiency, second in career rushing touchdowns and fifth in career passing touchdowns.

He led UNLV to victories in each of its first three games this season, throwing for 318 yards and scoring six touchdowns, while also running for 253 yards and scoring one score.

The Rebels will rely on either Hajj-Malik Williams or Cameron Friel at quarterback on Saturday when they play their Mountain West Conference opener against Fresno State.
