In that set there was little difference between Botic van de Zandschulp and Carlos Alcaraz on the first serve: Alcaraz won 67 percent of the points from the first serve and Van de Zandschulp 75 percent.

The difference only came on the second serve. Van de Zandschulp won 70 percent of the points behind him, and Alcaraz only 29 percent.

Van de Zandschulp also won 10 of the 11 net points he played, exploiting one of the most confusing features of the Spaniard’s game. Alcaraz hits a quality lob, which means he often tries to hit it — but he usually won’t leave it alone if it doesn’t get the height it needs.

Fittingly, a measured forehand pass gives him the first game of the second set, whipping the crowd into a frenzy. Regular Alcaraz followers know that a series of high-quality shots followed by some crowd interaction usually spells doom for his opponent.
