    US Open Men’s Semifinals: Taylor Fritz Defeats Frances Tiafoe; Faces Jannik Sinner in Final

    The 2024 US Open men’s and women’s singles tournaments have produced a number of surprises at the end, with new names advancing deep into the semifinals. In the women’s singles event, Jessica Pegula, making her first Grand Slam final, will take on Aryna Sabalekena for the title on Saturday, while the men’s event will also see an American player reach her first major final.

    Taylor Fritz won a five-set endurance match over Frances Tiafoe in the first US Open semifinal between American players since 2005.

    After a back-and-forth match, with both players serving and long rallies throughout, Fritz finally broke Tiafoe’s serve to win the fourth set. And it seemed he finally wore Tiafoe down, winning the fifth set decisively.

    Fritz finished 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 and qualified for the US Open, where he will face Jannik Sinner in the final on Sunday.

    Tiafoe shook off the early nerves that resulted in several mistakes against Fritz. However, he calmed down and began to assert himself with powerful forehands and extended rallies that sent Fritz all over the court to defend. Eventually, Tiafoe rallied to win a first set that initially seemed lost.

    The second set was much more of a back-and-forth affair, with neither player able to break the other’s serve. Fritz in particular had more difficulty returning Tiafoe’s serve.

    But Fritz eventually recovered and wore Tiafoe down, sending him side by side across the court and showing a strong forehand. Although Tiafoe forced the set to 5-5, Fritz won nine of the ten points to avoid a tiebreaker and win the second set.

    In the third set, Fritz tried to change his approach by playing more aggressively at the net instead of staying behind. However, he could not break Tiafoe’s serve, and was often blocked when trying to return. While Fritz tried to hold his ground, Tiafoe countered with cross-court forehands that could not be caught.

    Fritz, however, came back immediately and held on to start the fourth set. He gave up the game at the net and took the game to Tiafoe with powerful serves and long rallies. But when Fritz got ahead, Tiafoe rallied to even the set. Fritz eventually forced a fifth set by breaking Tiafoe’s serve.

    The men’s semi-finals started on Friday with No. 1 Jannik Sinner beating No. 25 Jack Draper in three sets: 7-5, 7-6 (3), 6-2, but it was certainly not as easy as the score suggests.

    The match was played in the scorching New York City heat, with both players battling fatigue. Draper suffered the most, sweating through his first two shirts and appearing to throw up twice during a grueling second set. That set ultimately lasted an hour and 29 minutes, the second longest of the entire tournament.

    It didn’t help that both men played their quarter-finals just a day earlier.

    Sinner showed the form you would expect from a top seed, even after he appeared to have injured his wrist in the second set. His serve was fantastic, winning 76% of the points with it and he won more than his share of entertaining points against the 22-year-old Draper.

    Sinner reaches his first US Open final, after winning his first Grand Slam at this year’s Australian Open. He will likely be the favorite on Sunday against Fritz, the first American in the final since 2006 and the first to advance to a Grand Slam final since 2009.

    That’s how Friday’s tournament unfolded at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center during the 2024 US Open.

      Fritz breaks Tiafoe’s serve and this match goes to a fifth set. Fritz wins the fourth, 6-4.

      It looked like it would be five sets from the start and that was not disappointing.

      Fritz seems to have let it slide just as much and instead tries to force the action on Tiafoe with hard drives from the baseline. It seems to work, as he takes a 5-4 lead in the set, now that Tiafoe is serving.

      This is a different kind of endurance contest than the previous semifinal, when humidity troubled Jannik Sinner and Jack Draper. Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz go neck and neck,

      However, Fritz takes a 4-3 lead after Tiafoe pushes back and makes it 3-3. This match is starting to look like it is heading for a fifth set.

      Fritz held serve again, matching Tiafoe on almost every return. He’s not going away in this fourth set, and Tiafoe shouldn’t expect him to either.

      Fritz’s play at the net stopped Tiafoe’s returns. He won nine out of ten points, prevented Tiafoe from getting a tiebreaker and won the second set 7-5.
