The United States is investigating the unauthorized release of classified documents detailing Israel’s planned attack on Iran, The Associated Press reported.

The documents, attributed to the US Geospatial Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency, note that Israel was still moving military assets on the ground to carry out a military strike in response to Iran’s blistering ballistic missile attack on October 1. They could be shared within the ‘Five Eyes’, which are the US, UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

The documents, which are marked top secret, were posted on the messaging app Telegram last week and first reported by CNN and Axios. The AP first reported the U.S. investigation into the unauthorized release on Sunday, citing three U.S. officials. The AP said a fourth U.S. official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, indicated the documents appeared legitimate.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., also confirmed the investigation in an appearance on CNN.

“The leak is very worrying. There are a number of serious allegations being made, there is an investigation underway and I will have a briefing on that in a few hours,” Johnson said on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday. “There’s a classified briefing and another. But we are monitoring it closely.’

The investigation is also examining how the documents were obtained — including whether it was an intentional leak by a member of the U.S. intelligence community or through some other method, such as a hack — and whether other intelligence information was compromised, one of the officials told the American intelligence service. AP, adding that officials are working to determine who had access to the documents before they were posted.

The documents first appeared online on Friday through a channel on Telegram, claiming they were leaked by someone in the US intelligence community and later by the US Department of Defense. The information appeared to have been collected entirely through satellite image analysis.

The AP reported that one of the two documents was similar to other U.S. National Geospatial Intelligence Agency material leaked by Jack Teixeira, an Air National Guardsman who pleaded guilty in March to leaking top-secret military documents about Russia’s war against Ukraine and other national security secrets.

The Telegram channel involved in the leak identifies itself as based in Tehran, the capital of Iran. It previously published memes featuring Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and material in support of Tehran’s self-styled “Axis of Resistance,” which includes Middle Eastern terrorist groups armed by the Islamic republic.
