Wendy Williams is ‘permanently disabled’ due to her ‘tragic’ battle with dementia, her guardian claims in court

WENDY Williams is “permanently incapacitated” by her “tragic” battle with dementia, her guardian has claimed in court.

The US Sun can exclusively reveal the stunning court confession from lawyers for Wendy’s guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, which was recorded in the battle with Lifetime over the documentary Where is Wendy Williams?

In the filing, Sabrina’s legal team calls Wendy, 60, “an acclaimed entertainer who, tragically, has been struck by early-onset dementia and has, as a result, been left cognitively impaired and permanently disabled.”

The admission of the extent of Wendy’s illness is a crushing blow to her loyal fan base, many of whom held out hope that she would one day make a triumphant return.

The filing further states: “In January 2022, after becoming aware of a pattern of troubling events involving (Wendy’s) well-being and finances, Wells Fargo took the highly unusual step of initiating custody proceedings on its own initiative in the Supreme Court of New York, New York County (the ‘Guardianship Proceeding’), to request the appointment by the court of an independent guardian for (Wendy’s) financial affairs.

In the document, the guardian’s legal team pleads with the court to redact parts of the case regarding Wendy’s “health, family relationships and finances” to protect her privacy.

“We respectfully request that the Court grant Plaintiff’s request for limited redaction to protect nonpublic information from the guardianship proceedings placed under seal by the court overseeing those proceedings,” the papers continued.

RESTRICTION ORDER AND LAWSUITS

In February, Wendy’s guardian tried to stop Lifetime from releasing its documentary featuring the iconic TV talk show host with a restraining order.

The request was quickly rejected by an appellate judge, who ruled that blocking Lifetime from airing the documentary would be an “impermissible prior restriction of speech in violation of the institution’s First Amendment.”

Wendy’s guardian filed a lawsuit against Lifetime and the production companies involved on February 20, just days before the documentary was released, but according to a filing, the guardian “never filed the original complaint.”

She filed an amended complaint on September 16, 2024, which was served on all defendants, including A&E Television Networks, Entertainment One Reality Productions, Lifetime Entertainment Services, Creature Films and director Mark Ford.

The lawsuit was subsequently moved to federal court by the New York Supreme Court in October.

Since then, the suspects have filed countersuits against Wendy’s guardian.

WENDY’S DIAGNOSIS

As The US Sun previously reported, Wendy was diagnosed with alcohol-related brain damage before being placed under guardianship in 2022.

In 2019, Wendy received a devastating diagnosis of alcohol-related brain damage during a rehabilitation stay in Delray Beach, Florida, sources claim.

While in Florida, a brain scan was performed as part of Wendy’s rehabilitation stay.

A neurologist spoke with the star, her son, Kevin Hunter Jr., 23, and her then-husband, Kevin Hunter Sr., 51.

“The doctor explained to them that Wendy was suffering from alcohol-related brain damage. They told her that her alcohol abuse had caused permanent damage to the layers of her brain,” the source said.

How Wendy Williams’ custody came about

Wendy was absent for the entire final season of The Wendy Williams Show from 2021-2022.

In 2022, The Wendy Williams Show host’s bank, Wells Fargo, petitioned a New York court to hold a custody hearing for the star.

In their petition, the bank raised concerns that Wendy was “a victim of undue influence, dementia and financial exploitation.”

In March 2022, Wendy was placed under guardianship in New York.

New York attorney Sabrina Morrissey was appointed the star’s temporary guardian.

During this time, Wendy was also absent from her wildly popular daytime talk show of the same name for the entirety of the final season.

After The US Sun contacted Wendy’s guardian for a response to the claims, they publicly announced that the star had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and aphasia.

“As Wendy’s fans know, she has been outspoken with the public in the past about her medical struggles with Graves’ disease and lymphedema, as well as other significant challenges related to her health,” her team said.

“The decision to share this news was difficult and was made after careful consideration, not only to advocate understanding and compassion for Wendy, but to raise awareness of aphasia and frontotemporal dementia and to support the thousands of others who are in similar circumstances to be in.

“Receiving a diagnosis has enabled Wendy to get the medical care she needs.”
