What the Browns Said – 2024 Preseason Week 3: Seahawks vs. Browns

“Obviously didn’t win there, but happy with the effort. Guys were flying around, which we enjoyed seeing. They fought to the end there. It was a good trip for us, coming here a couple days early, got a lot of work done. Went to the University of Washington there. Toured there, got some work done there. So thanks to U-Dub (University of Washington) and Coach Fisch for taking care of us while we were here, but did a really good job tonight and then we get on that plane and go home.

You know, the game, again, like I said, wants the results to be different, but happy with the effort, just going to some of the guys that we rested. Obviously, considerations with some of the guys that were dealing with injuries, and then bringing some guys in and out after what we thought was a good job. With Deshaun, just considerations with the guys that were out there on offense, not just the offensive line, but just didn’t feel like it would be best to have him out there in this setting. Very, very confident in the amount of work that he’s gotten so far this spring and summer and he’ll be ready to roll in Week 1. That answers all the questions.”

Deshaun wanted to play, right?

Did you really have to talk to him?

“Yes, our guys are competitors and as I told you, you always have to take all the information that comes in and he has played before in pre-season, but I felt that in this situation with the guys not being available, it was best for him to rest.”

And what about the start Dorian gave the team when he replaced Jameis?

“Yeah, had some nice moments. Obviously a really nice play on that throw to Jamari Thrash, who got hit throwing it. Performed well, and again, it goes back to Dorian’s good work at the time he was cleared, which was maybe in June, finally getting back out there and he’s done a good job since then.”

And what about Jameis Winston? The most we’ve seen of him.

“Yes, played well, threw a few good passes across the field, was explosive a few times, but also led the attack well.”

Coach, you played six games with Deshaun two years before your junior year. What do you know about Deshaun as a quarterback and what do you hope to learn from more experience on the field?

“Yeah, I think we’ve had a lot of time together as an attack, as a teammate with this team. He’s a winner, keeps winning games for us. I’m excited for him with all the work he’s put in this off-season, I’m excited for him.”

As for the pain in his arm, he came back on Thursday. We weren’t there, but he came back on Thursday, right?

And he did everything? So you feel good about how his arm feels now?

“I do. I do. Yeah, I feel great.”

So he’s going to train full out next week?

Are you relieved that your QB1 is feeling well?

“Yeah, but he felt good, he really did. After the surgery, he got himself into position. Obviously, you’re going to have days where you don’t feel great, but he’s pushed through, he’s practiced well, he’s excited.”

I know you had a couple injuries in this game. Is there anything to be concerned about with D’Onta and Pierre Strong Jr.?

“He has a rib injury. I don’t have an update on that yet.”

Okay, and these guys both had concussions?

“I think they’re in the protocol. Yes.”

Tyler Huntley made a few appearances on the field. Isn’t that what you’d expect from a five-year veteran at that point?

“Yeah. Snoop’s (Huntley) played a lot of good football for us, a lot of good football in his career. He’s a playmaker. You saw it. It showed tonight when things aren’t there, he finds a way to make a play, so I thought he did a really good job.”

Did he give you guys a hard time? I know Andrew said before the game that you guys were probably going to keep three quarterbacks.

“Everything is tough, honestly. Every decision is tough and that’s the — that’s a good selection. That’s a good problem to have when you have to make tough decisions, but you know, I’ve told this football team and I’m very, very thankful for the hard work that these guys have put in, again, going all the way back to April. They’ve done everything we’ve asked them to do.”

And why did you want to see — (Inaudible).

“Yes, and he wanted to. He wanted to fall for it at least once.”

Is Denzel still in concussion protocol or is he not ready yet —

“Yes, I don’t have an update yet.”

And I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but do you expect there to be an influx onto the line after this game and players rejoining the team?

“I do. I feel good about getting some guys back next week, and especially going into Week 1. I feel really good about it.”

Can you characterize your pre-season, your entire training camp? Where do you want to be —

“Well, I think you have to use all these days to your advantage. I think next week is a big part of that. I think those four days that you get before that break over Labor Day are really important, so we’re going to cover a lot of ground, situational football, get guys up to speed, so we’ve got a lot of work to do, even next week before Labor Day.”

Given the uncertainty of the top quarterback, you obviously want to find a solution this year. How much does that mean and how much effort have you put into the depth with Jameis, with Huntley? If you have to draw from that depth…

“Yeah, I wouldn’t characterize it relative to previous years. I would just tell you that I feel really good about all four of those guys. I think they’ve all done a really good job, looking back, again, throughout the entire offseason program, not just in these games, in the practices, that they’ve done in the building. I think it’s a really, really strong group.”

Do you have confidence that as Deshaun progresses, he’ll have more personnel at the left tackle position to make sure he’s well protected?

“Yeah, I think guys are going in the right direction. I’m happy with how they’re working and then we’ll see how the next few days go.”

Do you think you have to look completely outside for a running back, given that Pierre also has a rib injury, or do you think you’ll be fine?

“That’s a good question. I think we’ll know more in the next few days, but I think it’s going to be okay. I do.”
